In the heart of Madurai’s Avaniyapuram community lies a government high school that
serves over 400 students from grades 6 through 12, providing an essential lifeline to
affordable education for children from surrounding poor and middle-class families. While
private schools in the area offer better facilities, they come with hefty fees that many local
families simply cannot afford. For these families, Avaniyapuram Government High School
is their only hope for a quality education. However, like many under-resourced institutions,
the school faces numerous challenges: insufficient classrooms, inadequate furniture, and
the absence of essential science labs.
The absence of dedicated Physics and Chemistry labs has made learning science especially
challenging for students in grades 11 and 12, who must travel to distant schools to
complete their lab work and exams - a time-consuming and costly inconvenience that
disrupts their studies and limits their potential to thrive in scientific fields. Furthermore, the
lack of enough classrooms has led to overcrowding, impacting the quality of education and
focus in the learning environment. The school also has no multipurpose hall, leaving
students with no indoor space for events or gatherings and no shelter during lunch breaks
in rainy weather.
Moved by the hardships faced by these students, Babu Dilip decided to take on an
ambitious project to transform the school into a more welcoming, functional, and dignified
place of learning. His belief that “no one should be denied quality education due to poverty”
became his guiding principle as he committed to building a new, fully equipped school
facility that would meet the students’ needs and create opportunities for growth, learning,
and joy.
